Moving a Replit app to production shouldn’t mean rewriting it
Your Replit agent built an app people already use. Before more users sign up, we secure the live database, fix login and exposed keys, and choose hosting that can handle your traffic. The code Replit wrote stays in place.

What we usually find when reviewing a Replit app
Replit keeps the editor, agent, database, and hosting in one place. Such a setup lets you build a first version in an afternoon, but it can also hide problems until real users arrive. We find the same four issues in almost every app we review.
- database
One database for development and customer data
When an app connects to an external Supabase or Neon database, the workspace and deployed app share the same credentials. Replit’s dev and production split doesn’t cover external databases, so every agent session can access live customer records.
- replit-auth
Login tied to Replit
Replit Auth depends on identity headers added by Replit’s proxy. Move the app to another host, and those headers disappear. Users can no longer sign in.
- deployment
Hosting chosen by default
The deployment type and machine size selected during the first publish remain unchanged. With Autoscale, the first visitor after a quiet period may wait for the app to wake up. With a Reserved VM, you pay for capacity even when no one is using it.
- secrets
Keys stored in the code
API keys are in source files instead of Replit Secrets. Anyone who forks the Repl or opens the GitHub copy can see them.
Replit security checks we run before launch
| Category | In your Replit app | What it costs you |
|---|---|---|
| Database | Agent sessions and customers share one database | One wrong prompt can delete or overwrite live records |
| Auth | Login depends on Replit Auth headers | Every sign-in fails once the app runs outside Replit |
| Secrets | API keys written into source files | Anyone with the code can run up your API bills |
| Hosting | Deployment type and size left at defaults | Slow first loads or paying for idle machines |
| Code | Agent edits ship straight to users | A fix in one place quietly breaks another |
How to take a Replit app to production, stage by stage
Your work doesn’t stop while we prepare the app for production. Your team can keep prompting in the Replit workspace, and each stage ends with something you can test before we move on.
Step 1. Security audit and review
1–3 days
Our engineers connect to your Replit app’s GitHub repository and trace how it reads and writes data, how users sign in, where keys are stored, and how much the current deployment costs each month.
Result: a complete list of risks, ranked by how quickly they could affect your app, along with a fixed price to resolve them.
Step 2. Protect live data
1–3 weeks
We create a separate development database and remove every route the agent could use to reach production. We rotate exposed keys and move them to Secrets. We move payment and access controls to the server, so they no longer rely on the browser.
Result: the agent can’t access live data. You see progress in weekly deliveries.
Step 3. Harden
1–3 weeks
We replace Replit Auth with a provider that works on any host. Automated tests cover sign-up, payments, and the workflows customers use every day. Agent changes reach production only after review and a successful test run.
Result: you’re alerted to errors before customers report them, and Friday releases are as controlled as Tuesday ones.
Step 4. Launch
end of project, then ongoing
Based on your traffic and budget, we run the app on a properly configured Replit Deployment or move it to cloud hosting you own. We connect your custom domain, keep the previous version ready for a quick rollback, and switch over during the quietest traffic window.
Result: you own the accounts that host the app and store its data. We can continue building new features or hand everything over to your team with complete documentation.

Live data out of the agent’s reach in the first weeks; production in up to 3 weeks. If we miss an agreed milestone, you don’t pay.
Contact usWhat stays on Replit, and what moves
The first question we hear is whether a Replit app needs to be rebuilt from scratch. Usually, it doesn’t. The code Replit Agent produced is a solid starting point. Most of the work goes into preparing the systems around it for production.
What stays
Untouched- The existing code, including recent changes made by the agent.
- The pages and features your customers already use and pay for.
- Every record in your database, migrated intact.
- Replit, for team members who prefer building there.
What changes
Production layer- The agent works with a separate development database and never touches live data.
- Sign-in uses a provider that works on any host.
- Keys move to Secrets, and any exposed credentials are replaced.
- Hosting fits your usage, whether that means a properly sized Replit Deployment or a cloud account you own. Staging remains separate from production.

Built with another tool?
Replit isn’t the only builder we take to production. Each one leaves a different first problem behind, so the starting point changes with the tool.
- LovableLock down Supabase tables before paying users arrive.
- BoltMove a browser-built app into your own repo and database.
- Base44Own the backend instead of renting it from the platform.
- CodexReview and test code nobody has checked yet.
- Claude CodeGive a fast-growing codebase structure and tests.

Questions about taking a Replit app live
Start with the database. Identify which database the deployed app uses, then block the development workspace from accessing it. Move every key to Replit Secrets and rotate any exposed credentials. Use Replit Deployments instead of the Run button, then connect your custom domain.
These steps address the biggest immediate risks. Testing, monitoring, and replacing Replit Auth require more engineering work, so many founders bring in specialists for that stage.
Replit itself has improved. It can separate development and production databases and keep the agent away from live data. The risks we usually find come from how the app is configured, not the platform itself.
Sharing an external database, storing keys in the code, or running security checks only in the browser can make an app unsafe on any host.
No. Many apps run well on Replit Deployments when the deployment type, machine size, and database are configured correctly.
Cloud hosting may make more sense when your traffic, costs, or team’s tools require it. Our review shows which option fits your app.
Yes. Your team can keep using Replit Agent in development. The difference is that every change must pass review and automated tests before it reaches customers.
Autoscale works well for uneven traffic because it scales down when the app is idle. The trade-off is a slower first request when the app wakes up.
Reserved VM suits steady traffic and background jobs because it stays online. We choose between them based on your traffic patterns and monthly hosting costs.
We migrate your records without losing data, whether the database stays in Replit PostgreSQL or moves to an account you own. Replit Auth accounts need to move to a new sign-in provider. We plan the migration so customers can sign in and find their existing data and history.
It depends on the scope. A skilled freelancer can handle focused work such as moving keys to Secrets or separating the development and production databases.
Running an app in production requires ongoing support. Someone needs to monitor alerts, review agent changes, and roll back failed releases when necessary. That’s where a team becomes valuable, and it’s what our fixed price covers. We can also work alongside a freelancer you already trust.
